Day 5 - they think it's all over

Morning in Stuttgart and torrential rain. A change of plan formed last night comes into action, seeing a transfer for the cyclists to 20 miles out of the city, by minibus (to avoid the Birkenhead tunnel), making the remaining distance achievable despite reduced speeds on the wet roads.

Day 4 - Rain, the Rhine and Rubbish sat nav

If Tuesday was the day of wind and Wednesday was the day of hills, today was the day of wind and hills. And a bit of drizzle early-on. Threatening inclement weather forced a reduction in the long-riders ambitions from 140 miles to 120 miles, while the more conservative riders aimed for a further 50-odd.

Day 3 - morning Belgium, daytime Luxembourg, evening Germany

Day 2 - absolutely ruined

These cyclists don’t half like to give themselves a hard time. Happy hour turned into a trip to the local bar (til closing), turned into a return to the hotel bar etc etc... Sambucas were even mentioned at one point. Still, by 3.30am everyone was finally in bed, just in time for the 6am alarm call.

Day 1 - and not a pedal pushed yet...

A 6.30am departure from the STG offices in Castleford to the echoing call of “everyone got their passport?” from Andy “Evans” Watson. Ah – no. Not Ryan “Syrup” Tilford. Sharp detour for the missing passport then on the road south for two minibuses loaded with cyclists and support crew, and a van loaded with some extremely expensive bikes.
